Entry Requirements:

5 GCSEs grades 3-9. Interview and reference. This qualification is suitable for 16-18 year olds progressing directly from YR 11 and also for 18+ learners wishing to enter a career in Engineering or secure an apprenticeship.

What's it all about?:

Talented engineers, technicians and managers are vital to the future success of the engineering and aeronautical industries. This course will give you a solid knowledge base as well as supporting you to develop essential hand skills that will enable you to progress onto an apprenticeship or onto a higher level of study in either Operations and Maintenance or Aircraft Maintenance.

How long is the course?:

1 year – 3 days a week

How much does it cost?:

Free to those aged 16-18

There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.

Additional course costs of approx. £100 a year will apply. This will cover the cost of educational visits, textbooks, guest speakers etc.

What will I do?:

The course consists of 4 Mandatory Units and up to 8 Optional Units. These include:

  • Working Efficiently and Effectively in an Engineering Environment
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Producing components using hand fitting techniques
  • Maintaining mechanical devices and equipment
  • Maintaining electrical equipment and systems
  • Wiring and testing electrical equipment and circuits
  • Maintaining aircraft mechanical devices and equipment
  • General electrical and avionic engineering applications
  • Stripping and rebuilding engines

What can I do next?:

You can progress to an apprenticeship in various sectors that could lead to careers such as an Airfield Engineer, Aircraft Fitter, Aerospace Engineer, Maintenance Technician and many more. You can also progress on to our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Operations and Maintenance or Aeronautical Engineering (a stepping stone towards becoming a licensed Aircraft Engineer).

All enrolled students at Stansted Airport College will be eligible to lease an apple device to enable them to learn where and when they want. All students will are expected to have use of an IPad for their learning, in the majority of cases through a lease-to-buy scheme.
