Entry Requirements:

You must be either 17 or 18 years old. Minimum of 5 GCSEs grades 4-9 (previously A-C). AS or A Levels are desirable. Interview and reference.

What's it all about?:

This programme is specifically designed to help you transition into the workplace at Stansted Airport and will help you to gain an understanding of key airport operations and provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to progress into a career within the aviation industry. You will also gain an appreciation of the terminology used within the industry as well as check in and dispatch procedures. This is a fantastic opportunity to get your foot in the door with a highly reputable employer.

How long is the course?:

1 year Full-time – Minimum 3 days a week.

How much does it cost?:

Free to those aged 16-18

There is a range of financial support that you may be entitled to, including: Learner Support funds, grants and bursaries and employer support.

Additional course costs of approx. £100 a year will apply. This will cover the cost of educational visits, textbooks, guest speakers etc.

What will I do?:

The course you will study is the L3 Aviation Operations qualification and consists of 4 Mandatory Units and up to 8 Optional Units. These include: 

  • The UK Aviation Industry
  • Health & Safety in the Aviation Industry
  • Security in the Aviation Industry
  • Customer service in Aviation
  • Team Leadership
  • Passenger Terminal Management
  • Flight Operations
  • Aircraft Dispatch

Engagement with Employers is a mandatory element of this qualification. A minimum of 30hours work experience is required as part of this programme

Assessment methods include a combination of examinations, project work and written assignments.

What can I do next?:

You can progress into employment in a range of roles across the airport including Security Officer, Airline Customer Service Agent, General Operative airside, Flight Operations Agent, Cabin Crew and many more. You can also progress to an apprenticeship as a ground specialist followed by a higher apprenticeship as a Ground Operations Manager.

Careers:

This qualification is the first stepping stone towards a number of exciting and sustainable careers within the aviation industry and many other businesses. Example job roles include airport information assistant, airline customer service agent, flight operations, cabin crew, aircraft ramp handler, security officer, terminal operations agent. Further study and experience can lead you to becoming an Air Traffic Controller, Security Manager, Ground Operations Manager, crew operations co-ordinator and more.
