Employers will set their own entry requirements in order to start on this apprenticeship.

A commis chef is the most common starting position in many kitchens and in principal the most junior culinary role. A commis chef prepares food and carries out basic cooking tasks under the supervision of a more senior chef. The primary objective of the commis chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen. Therefore having the opportunity to experience, consider and value each section with a view to choosing an area where they feel most inspired. The learning journey of any chef will vary considerably from one individual to the next; however it is necessary to understand and have experience in the basics that this role provides in order to progress to any future senior chef role.
A Commis chef will be required to demonstrate knowledge, skills and behaviours across 4 key areas. These include:
The End Point Assessment will test the entire Standard, and will comprise of: Knowledge test, practical observation, culinary challenge observation and a professional discussion.
This qualification is graded Pass/ Distinction/Fail
On completion, individuals could progress to be a Chef de Partie role or Senior Production Chef role. You could also progress to the level 3 Hospitality Supervisor apprenticeship Standard.

You could be working within a multinational hotel, a VIP lounge at the airport or even a highly reputable restaurant or food outlet as a Head Chef, Executive Chef or a General Manager.

Apprenticeship Standards are assessed through independent end point assessors. Your role as an apprentice may vary depending on your employer. Learners that have not yet achieved a minimum of grade 3 or D in GCSE English or Maths will be required to complete a Level 1 functional skill qualification prior to taking the end point assessment.
You must have a job to do an apprenticeship. If you already have a job you may be able to do an apprenticeship with your current employer.
